How To

College Admissions Essay Tips

Your high school transcript has been submitted. You have completed filling out the general questionnaire, penned your short answers to the short answer questions and doled out the requests for recommendation letters. All that is left now is your college admissions essay. And it also is probably the last thing you want to do.

Writing a Good College Admissions Essay

Writing a good college admissions essay is imperative. Your essay can be the deciding factor between whether you are admitted into a university or not. With so much responsibility riding on one essay, putting it all together can be a daunting task. College admissions officers go through hundreds of applications every year as students across the nation send in their packets for consideration. Many academic resumes can look the same. A good student with good grades involved in several good extracurricular programs is, well, good, but when there are hundreds of good applicants, admissions officers are searching for the rare excellent students out there to accept into the university. One way to do so is to read the personal essays that come with the applications and determine which student behind the essay is worth admitting. After all, your high school transcript only says so much about you. Your personal essay is a way for admissions officers to learn more about you and why you would be a good addition to the school.

Stand Out From the Rest

The most important thing that you need to do to craft a personal essay that will set you apart is to follow the instructions provided by the school. If there is a word count limit, be sure to stick to that limit. In addition, make certain that your essay adequately answers the prompt. With those rules in mind, you can begin crafting the best way to sell yourself to the college admissions officer who will be reading your essay. One good technique to use is to tell a story that exemplifies all of your best traits. This means that instead of simply stating that you are a hardworking individual with natural leadership skills, tell a story of a time when you showcased such skills. This makes your essay much more interesting and personal, something which admissions officers like to see. Also explain why you would be a good addition to the school. Mention why you want to go to that particular college, what you will learn there and how your presence will contribute to the school’s success. Finally, read over your completed essay several times to check for grammatical and spelling errors. After completing that final step, you can send off your personal essay knowing that it will show admissions officers why they should accept you.
