Schools That Don’t Require the GRE

The GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is an assessment that focuses on a student’s reasoning skills in a myriad of subjects to help them get ready for their online master’s degree. The Graduate Record Examination usually costs around $205 for students to take upon applying for graduate schools and programs alike. In many universities and colleges, typically the more traditional schools will require you to take and successfully pass the GRE when applying for graduate programs. However, due to the current health climate with COVID-19 that has unfortunately affected the entire world, many schools all throughout America are now starting to completely waive the GRE or be a little more lenient towards GRE requirements for those who may not want to pay such a hefty fee or take a test in order to enter their desired program.

Though some schools are completely dismissive of their GRE requirements, some schools and programs may have a different policy. The GRE requirements for professional degrees may vary based on the program and may be optional for many. Some non-doctoral terminal degrees may also vary in terms of their GRE requirements per program, and may instead require students to have a portfolio of their work history. Online programs also vary by program.

Although a program may not call for students to take the GRE and provide their scores upon admission, this does not mean that the admissions requirements are less difficult or that the school curriculum is less rigorous than any other school. In fact, many admissions standards may be even more difficult if it doesn’t call for GRE scores as the GRE is a more definitive route in admissions. A university is able to set the standards when it comes to student acceptance prerequisites and may require you to take a different test, provide an essay, have a certain GPA minimum, or anything else. This, of course, varies based on the school and the major in which you choose.

If you’re someone who doesn’t want to take the GRE because of the fee or maybe you haven’t been in school for quite some time, it’s always a good idea to check the applicable standards of a school that piques your interest before fully committing no matter what school you go to or what subject you decide to study.
